Tjuringa 2025

Term 1, Week 1

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.

We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations,  and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.

We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.

New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.

Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.

Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.

As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.

Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.

Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

A note from our Principal....

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to 2025, Aspendale Primary School’s 100th year of education. It has been wonderful to see the smiling faces of our 467 students as they enter for the school year.

This morning we welcomed our 57 Foundation students and their families as they embarked on their first day of primary school. It was terrific to see them smoothly settle into their day, feeling both excited and nervous but ready to begin after their successful transition program facilitated by our Foundation team and their families.

We are marking our 100 years in several ways this year. One way is with our commemorative school polo, available through the uniform shop. Students are able to wear the polo to school on all days and will be able to wear it future years.

This year, our annual welcome event ‘A Night on the Green’ will be held slightly earlier to allow us to launch into our 100th year. The event will take place on the evening of Friday 21st. The evening is a casual opportunity for families to get to know each other, enjoy a picnic and enjoy some music. Families can bring their own picnics and there will be food trucks on-site.

Over the year, you may have enquiries or questions about different matters involving your child. Your child’s teacher or the school office are your first point of contact and they will endeavour to follow things up for you. Our staff will respond to emails within two school days of receiving them and within school hours. If you need further follow up, you can let members of school leadership know using the school email address: aspendale.ps@education.vic.gov.au

The link below takes you to the school complaints policy.

Many families have started to utilise the Victorian Government’s School Saving Bonus. Thanks to our office team for their work in administering this new initiative. Thanks to our school community for your patience as we continue to correctly process the School Saving Bonus. If you have questions about accessing or allocating the School Saving Bonus, please contact the school office.

Work on our Year One and Two learning space is scheduled for this year, with work beginning in the Year One space first. Our Year One classes have started the year in a different space so that work can begin as soon as possible. We will continue to update the community as the work progresses.

Our canteen manager, Meg Wheelhouse,  has the canteen ready to go and it will re-open on Thursday 6th February. Orders can be placed via the Qkr app. We are looking forward to Meg and her team of volunteers looking after our students with their yummy lunches and warm smiles.

Again, welcome to the school year and on behalf of the staff at Aspendale Primary School we look forward to working with our school community to provide our students with enriching learning experiences,

Tom Pearce

Principal

Year of the Snake

Happy Year of the Snake!

Goodbye Dragons, hello to the Year of the Snake. In Chinese culture, the snake symbolises wisdom, intuition, and transformation.

The Year of the Snake is the birth year of many of our Year 6 students. It is a  year to embrace knowledge, adaptability, and personal growth. May this year bring you intelligence in decision-making, success in your endeavours, and harmony in life.

We sent a Christmas and New Year wishes video to our sister school, Xuri Jingcheng Primary School. Our principal, Mr Pearce, and the Mandarin leaders represented our school in the video, sharing their best wishes. All the students and staff from our sister school watched it during their assembly. They are now enjoying their Chinese New Year holiday, and we hope to see them when they visit us later this year.

Meet our team

Wednesday 5th February - Global Play Day!

Global School Play Day is observed annually every first Wednesday in February. This day promotes the importance of unstructured, regular play for children. The campaign was started by a group of six educators in 2015 because they felt playtime for children was decreasing both at home and in school, which was impacting children’s development.

As with 2024 we will be devoting the whole day to this initiative. On this day students will have the opportunity to have a play session with their buddy, play time within their own year level and also participating in some whole class games.

Students are invited to bring in objects such as toys or craft materials from home that they would like to use on the day. We do ask that items are clearly named, do not require batteries, and that they are not expensive or IT items such as phones or ipads, etc…

Night on the Green

We look forward to a fabulous evening with our school and wider community, helping to kick start our 100 Years Celebrations.

We will be in need of parent helpers on the night to help organise and run our sausage sizzle and/or book sale. Please reach out to Sarah Cornell if you can help in any way.

Do you know any past students, families or staff?

Please reach out and let them know they are welcome to attend our special night, where we will also be offering school tours from 5.00 - 5.30pm.

100 Years Celebrations!

We have several events planned throughout the year, as part of our 100 Years Celebrations. Please contact Sarah Cornell for more details and if you are able to help in any capacity will all or any of these celebrations.

Thank you to those parents who have already reached out!

APS Girls Cricket Blast Program

The first cricket session of the program on Monday. It was great to see so many students show up.

We learnt some basic cricket skills....Perfect for the younger year levels. We look forward to the next few weeks of playing. We even got a hat, tote bag and a ball too!
