We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.
We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations, and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.
We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.
New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.
Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.
Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.
As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.
Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.
Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

Dear parents and carers,
We are enjoying a balmy autumn and it’s been lovely to hear of our students adventures to their local beach or to wider parts of Victoria to make the most of our current weather conditions. At school, students are experiencing the benefits of their early work in practising the routines of their classroom, year level and our school and this is allowing them to build momentum with their learning.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program for Literacy And Numeracy commenced yesterday with the writing assessment. Our Year Three and Five students had a mixture of yellow zone emotions, being both nervous and excited to show off what they know. The NAPLAN assessments are a great opportunity to gain a snapshot of how our school is improving across the curriculum and to identify areas to continue to refine. We appreciate our students efforts on these assessments and are grateful to our staff and our school community for supporting them with the assessments this week and next week.
Year Six Leadership Assembly
On Friday, we will hold our Year Six Leadership Assembly, where each of our Year Six student leaders will be presented with their leadership badge. We are fortunate to have our local state member, Tim Richardson, in attendance and our local federal member, Mark Dreyfus KC, has prepared a certificate to mark each student’s achievement.
Please note, we will not be presenting Student of the Week certificates at tomorrow’s assembly.
Year 1 & 2 Classroom Update
Our building project is in full swing in Year One. The construction team has removed the internal stud walls, framed up the cavity doors and is completing construction for our glass sliding doors to be installed over the holidays. Thanks to the builders and to our school community for keeping each other’s safety in mind during our project.
Oval Playground
Next week our new playground will be installed at the back of the oval. This will mean that for a few days our students will not be able to use the back section of the oval. We are excited to see the new playground come to life before our eyes, especially after our students helped with the design and our community has raised significant funds to support this project. Again, our students and the team constructing the playground will be mindful of each other’s safety during installation.
Curriculum Day
It was a great learning opportunity on Friday for our staff. Our teaching staff furthered their understanding of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, with a focus on explicit instruction. In the morning we explored explicit instruction’s place at our International Baccaulareate World School and the simple model of memory. In the middle part of the day we learnt more about cognitive load theory and in the afternoon we identified different examples of explicit instruction. Over the day our Education Support Staff completed their First Aid training. Thanks to Melissa Jacobs, Jess Johnston and Matt Bird for their organisation of our professional learning across the day.
Enjoy the rest of the week,
Tom
