Term 1 Week 9

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.

We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations,  and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.

We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.

New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.

Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.

Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.

As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.

Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.

Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

A note from our Principal....

Dear parents and carers,

It’s been wonderful to see our Year Two to Six students taking the opportunity to explore our new playground equipment at the back of the oval. They are choosing to be kind and safe and this is allowing lots of students to enjoy their time swinging, spinning and balancing on the different sections.

SRC Badges Tomorrow

Our Student Representative Council, formed of students from across Years 3-6, has been elected and has already started meeting regularly with Miss Clohesy. Tomorrow afternoon at assembly we will present each of these students with their SRC badges.

Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal

Our Student Representative Council has hit the ground running and has planned our Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal event. This year, with Easter falling at the end of the school holidays, our SRC has decided to hold their event in the first week back. On Thursday 24th April, students can wear pyjamas to school. They are encouraged to bring along a gold coin donation to go towards the RCH’s Good Friday Appeal.

Lightning Premiership

On Friday we had many of our senior students compete in the Summer Lightning Premiership. It’s been terrific to hear feedback from staff involved on the day as to the way our students chose to represent themselves and our school. Thanks to our Year 5 & 6 teachers for coaching the different teams and to Katie Scott for her organisation and coordination of this extra-curricular event for our students.

F-4 Intensive Swimming Program

Our Year Three and Four students have done a great job of following the extra routines involved with swimming, including remembering their gear each day, travelling on the bus and following the rules of the pool. We look forward to our Foundation, Year One and Year Two students following these routines with the support of their teachers next week.

Planning Week

We are in the middle of planning week, which overlaps the second half of this week and the first part of next week. During planning week, each year level team and our specialist team are allocated the day to review the teaching and learning from the previous term and to plan the teaching and learning program for the upcoming term. This is facilitated by allocating all of a year level’s specialist classes to the one day. It’s been great to hear teams identifying effective routines they have implemented across the term and refining their use of quality instructional practices.

Year One Building Update

Our Year One building refurbishment is nearing completion. Our cavity doors are installed, the painting is completed and the carpet will be laid tomorrow. We expect our Year One classes to move back into the space next week. The sliding glass doors are due to be installed in the first two weeks of Term Two.

We look forward to work commencing in the Year Two space over the school holidays.

Thanks again to our staff, students and our construction team for keeping each other’s safety front of mind.

Reminders

Next Friday 4th April is the last day of Term One. Please note that we will have an early dismissal at 2:30pm.

Term Two begins on Tuesday 22nd April

.

Enjoy the rest of your week,

Tom

Update from Year 4

Year 4
This week, the Year 4 students have been making a splash at Mentone Grammar for our swimming program!

Each day, they’ve had the chance to dive into improving their swimming skills while building confidence in the water. The program has offered a range of activities tailored to different skill levels, as well as practising water safety.

Along with the skill-building, there’s been plenty of fun and laughter. The program has not only strengthened their swimming abilities but also encouraged teamwork and resilience. It’s been a fantastic experience, and the students have loved every minute of it!

Why we love swimming…

"Swimming is fun, and doing the swimming program means I get to swim even more than I already do!" - Chelsea, 4JP

"Swimming helps you with other sports too, like surfing!"- Emerson, 4N

"Swimming is great exercise and it's fun!"- Harry, 4C

Wellbeing update

Term 1 Focus - Respect

This term our whole school wellbeing focus has been on Respect. The accompanying message from our Play is the Way program is “Treat others as you would like them to treat you”. All classes have engaged in many conversations and activities around how we show respect, and our ‘Expect Respect’ routine (shown below) has been revisited many times.

Our PBL leaders Sam and Hamish asked some students what respect is and here is what they reported.

Bread Tag Tokens

Please keep saving up your plastic bread tags and sending them into school for our whole school token acknowledgement system. We are always in need of more!

Good Friday Appeal

Hi everyone,

It is nearly that time of year again, where we hold our first SRC/ Whole School Fundraiser for the year!

The Good Friday Appeal raises money for the Royal Children’s Hospital to provide medical equipment, research, education and training, and patient and family care for those in need.

Our Student Representative Council has been working extremely hard this term to organise the day. They have been informing classes about the fundraiser and also hanging up many eye-catching posters around the school to promote the Good Friday Appeal at APS.

This year our fundraiser will be held on Thursday the 24th of April (Term 2, Week 1).

The SRC have decided on a theme - Pyjama Day! Students are welcome to dress up in their favourite pyjamas, ugg boots, and warm oodies.

We kindly ask for a gold coin donation on the day, to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Thank you very much,

The APS Student Representative Council

World Maths Day

World Maths Day

Mathletics World Maths Day is Coming Up!

Get ready to celebrate World Maths Day! On Wednesday, March 26, students around the globe will take part in one of the world’s largest online mathematics events using Mathletics. This exciting day is all about fostering a love of maths through engaging and interactive activities that build problem-solving skills, confidence, and a sense of fun.

At our school, we will be incorporating a range of hands-on and digital maths challenges to inspire our students. World Maths Day encourages participation at all skill levels, helping students see that maths is all around us – from cooking to shopping and even playing games!

Get Involved at Home!

Families can join in the fun too! Here are three engaging maths activities that you can do at home.

Count and Sort Treasure Hunt
Turn everyday objects into a maths adventure! Gather small items like buttons, blocks, or toy animals. Ask your child to count them, group them by colour or size, and even create simple addition or subtraction problems using the objects. This activity helps develop number recognition, counting, and early problem-solving skills.

Maths in the Kitchen
Cooking is a fantastic way to apply maths in real life. Let your child help measure ingredients, double or halve a recipe, or estimate cooking times. Discuss fractions when cutting fruit or dividing a pizza and compare weights using kitchen scales. These tasks reinforce measurement, multiplication, and division in a practical and tasty way!

Budgeting Challenge
Give your child a small budget (e.g. $25) and ask them to plan a simple meal or shopping trip. They can look through grocery store catalogues or online prices, compare costs, and ensure they stay within budget. Encourage them to calculate discounts, work out price per item, and reflect on the best deals. This real-world maths challenge builds financial literacy and problem-solving skills.
