We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.
We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations, and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.
We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.
New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.
Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.
Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.
As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.
Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.
Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

Dear parents and carers,
It’s been terrific to see our students return to their classrooms and kick off Term Two with purpose and commitment to their learning. Each class has settled into their routines and our teachers continue to implement and refine high-quality teaching practices.
It has been fun today for our school community to enjoy the day teaching and learning in our pyjamas. Today’s dress up day was in support of a good cause, the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, and we were excited to raise $721.15 Thanks to the Student Representative Council, led by Ms Clohesy and our House Captains, for your organisation of today.
ANZAC Day and March
Tomorrow is ANZAC Day and our school has again been invited to participate in the Longbeach RSL Sub Branch’s Day Service and March. Our school has an annual tradition of students wearing their school uniform and joining in a short march along Station St in Chelsea with many other community groups to honour those who have served in conflicts throghout our history.
If you would like to join us tomorrow, we are meeting at the intersection of Sherwood Avenue and Station St in Chelsea at 9:15. The march begins at 9:30 and proceeds to the cenotaph outside Chelsea City Hall in Station St. This will be followed by a service where two of our school captains will lay a wreath on behalf of our school community.
During their Buddy session today, Year 6 and Foundation met and created flower wreaths to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Positive Behaviour for Learning Update
We are several years into our implementation of the Positive Behavior for Learning framework. This framework sees the explicit teaching of expected behaviours to promote positive learning environments, clear encouragement of these expected behaviours and consistent responses from adults to discourage unwanted behaviours.
It was affirming to attend a recent Kingston Principal’s Network meeting and for our school to be acknowledged at a Silver Level credential for implementation of this framework. This puts us as a lead school in our network. We are proud of the work we have done so far and committed to continuing to strive for consistency as we embed the framework across the school. Thanks to our staff and students, led by our Wellbeing Learning Specialist Leanne Peterson, for their commitment to implementing this important improvement work.
Year One and Two Building Update
Our Year One students have moved back into their classrooms and our Year Two students have successfully transitioned into their temporary classrooms. Considerable work has taken place in the Year Two space over the holiday break and it has been great to see this continuing this term. Our Year One space is due to be completed on Monday, with the installation of the sliding doors to finish the learning area.
Once again, thanks to our school community for your continued support whilst this work has progressed.
School Photos
A reminder that our school photos will be taken this Monday 28th April. Students have been given a personalised form to bring on the day. If you have misplaced this, please contact our school office.
Enjoy your weekend,
Tom
This week, Year 6 has continued to find out about Autism as April is Autism Awareness month. We also know that there are a few people in our school who have autism and decided to look into it a bit more.
During class time, we learnt a few facts and information about autism. It was interesting to find out:
My opinion on autism is I think autism is when someone finds things tricky. It's hard to maintain friendships, communicate with peers and maybe adults. It is hard to understanding what behaviours are expected in places where they go often/less-often. It was interesting to find out about Autism.

The Canteen will reopen next week (1 May) and be open each Thursday and Friday for Term 2.
There will be some small changes to the menu, some old favourites returning to the menu and some new items added.
Be sure to check it out!
Also in line with the rising costs of supplies- there is a small increase in price to sushi.
Sushi will still be available each Friday and be same high quality. We have worked hard to keep costs for all items at an affordable level so families can enjoy lunches from the canteen on a regular basis.
We’re so proud of all of our House and everyone who competed for trying your best and we’re so proud of everyone who got into district and good luck for then. Well done everyone in Coolup House and everyone on the day.
We couldn’t have done it without you!
Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge is again under way and already in the first month we have had over 140 students register which is fantastic. This program is a great way for students to share and record their reading experiences from both home and school. Once registered, students will be provided with their own login details to record the books they read online.
All students completing the challenge receive a certificate and book to encourage their continued love of reading. If you have not registered yet there is still plenty of time to do so by picking up a form from your classroom teacher and dropping it in to the box outside the office. If you have any queries please speak to Leanne Peterson (Year 5), Sarah Cornell (Year 5) or Georgia Bourke (Year 1).
