Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.

We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations,  and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.

We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.

New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.

Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.

Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.

As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.

Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.

Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

From the Assistant Principal's desk

Dear parents and carers,

My fingers have almost thawed out to allow me to write this week’s newsletter. Four of our Year Six leaders coordinated a successful fundraising event to further support research into a cure for motor neuron disease.

The Big Freeze at APS

Tessa, Amelie, Samy and Sienna took action this term and turned an idea for fundraising into a memorable event for APS last Tuesday with a Fight MND Big Freeze. The group planned, advertised and coordinated the event which included the whole school wearing a splash of blue, bringing a donation and voting for teachers they wanted to see take part in the ‘Big Freeze’.

Everyone gathered in the courtyard for the moment Miss Stubbs, Mrs Youngs, Mr Dowling and I were dunked with icy water. I would like to thank the four students for their vision and commitment to creating such a great event and the school community for getting involved and donating. Keep reading the newsletter to see how much was raised.

Swing, Swagger and Smarts Parent Event

Tomorrow night is our parent and carer social event. We are looking forward to our community having the opportunity to dress up, enjoy time with friends and engage in some trivia and fun activities. Our Community Events team have worked tirelessly in the lead up to the event and we look forward to all of their efforts coming to fruition tomorrow evening.

Student Led Conferences

Thanks to those families who have accessed the Sentral Parent Portal to book their student-led conference on Monday 30th June. If you haven’t had the opportunity yet, you can book a time to meet with you child and their teacher via the Sentral Parent Portal. Student-led conferences allow students to celebrate their learning across the first half of the year with their teacher and their family. They also facilitate a conversation about opportunities for future learning across the second half of the year.

Please note Monday 30th June is a curriculum day. TheirCare will be offering care on the day.

Regional Cross Country

Congratulations to Fletcher Blue and Abby Smith who represented Aspendale PS at the Regional cross country championships yesterday. Both Fletcher and Abby competed hard and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship in their event. Fletcher finished 9th in his event and Abby finished 18th in her event. Fletcher will progress to the State cross country championships.

PBL Weekly Focus: Care for the Environment and keep it clean

Last week students across the school participated in a pre-emptive PBL focus with the first ever house based Emu-bob. The students were challenged with collecting as much rubbish from the oval as they could in a 15 minutes. Kurburoo house took out the win for this oval bonanza.

Foundation 2026:
Enrolements are now being accepted at the office for Foundation 2026. If you have a younger sibling starting next year, please head to the office for an enrolment pack if you are yet to enrol. It has been wonderful touring prospective families around the school and witnessing the learning taking place in all of the classrooms. If you know someone that is thinking of enrolling and they havent been on a tour yet, please encourage them to book a time thorugh the office.

I musy say I am excited that the Winter Solstice is this weekend as it means we are one step closer to summer!
Enjoy the weekend,

Amelia Busuttil

Year 6 update

This term, our 'Where we Are in Place and Time' inquiry has led to some pretty impressive excursions, incursions, sporting events, community Actions and assembly hostings! Add camp to the mix and Term 2 has been delightfully busy! Here are a snapshot of some of the places and experiences we have had over the past 9 weeks.

A few snippets from Year 6 authors:

Holocaust Museum

We went to the Holocaust museum, we studied Jews and how many hid during the Nazi invasion. The survivors all used to work at this museum. There were seven kids who we learned about John, Joe, Henri, Floris, Sonia, Paul, and Halina. My group was looking at John's story- He got called a name by someone he believed was one of his friends.but he was very confused and ran away thinking about what they said, he did not know who his friends were anymore.

  • Leah

We visited the museum and learnt about 7 child survivors of the Holocaust. The youngest was 5 years old! At the museum we saw a village using a projector to showcase what happened during and after the Holocaust. There were pictures of the survivors and their families and lots of cool videos about their lives. We also looked at key words and actions and rated them as a high risk or low risk and how it impacted the survivors or the people who helped them.

Junior Mayor Competition

A few week’s ago we had the Junior Mayor speaking competition. The School Captains represented Aspendale PS. We heard from the 2024 Junior Mayor and listened to a few other school's speeches. When it was time for ours, we got up and spoke about inclusion. We had asked students from across the school a series of questions about how they felt included in the classroom and in the yard-  we used this in our speech!  We spoke confidently and did our best. We then sat down and listened to see if we would win the Junior Mayor or Deputy title. Sadly, we didn't get any postitions but we had a fantastic time.

China Town adventures

On the 21st of May , Year Six ventured into Melbourne City to embark on a journey into China Town. The smells, appearance and culture were unforgettable. We learned many things like how lions were always in pairs to protect the structure of the building and humanity , many doors are red in Chinatown to block out evil spirits and how to make soup dumplings! We also explored the Chinese Museum hidden in the depths of Chinatown with a helpful guide. I definitely recommend this excursion for future Year Sixes .
