We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.
We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations, and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.
We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.
New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.
Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.
Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.
As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.
Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.
Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

Dear parents and carers,
It’s been terrific to make my way around the school and see our students putting the finishing touches to their reflections on their learning achievements over the first semester of 2025 in preparation for our upcoming student-led conferences. Our students are proud of their learning so far and are looking forward to showcasing this with their families and teachers on Monday. A reminder that Monday is a curriculum day. Care is available through our Out of School Hours Care provider, TheirCare, on the day.
Swing, Swagger & Smarts
Our parent/carer social event went off with a bang last Friday evening. It was wonderful to see people in their 1920s inspired get up enjoying an evening of trivia, games and dancing with their friends, whilst getting to know other members of our school community.
The evening was an overwhelming success due to the vision, organisation and tireless efforts of members of our Community Events Sub-committee, including Chrissy Morgan, Rhiannon Martin, Amber Pettiona, Katrina Woodman and Deb McNaughton. A special thanks to one of our grandparents, David Martin, for organising the trivia and games on the night. As the final figures roll in we know we have raised over $7000 on the evening and this is a significant contribution towards the new tables and chairs we have purchased for the hall.
Lightning Premiership
Recently students across Years 5 & 6 represented Aspendale Primary School at the Winter Lighnting Premiership carnival for our district. It is pleasing to again hear reports from each of the sports that schools across the district shared feedback about the high-level of respect, fun and fairness that all of our students played with on the day. This is something that we pride ourselves on as a school.
Five of our teams became district champions on the day, including our boys and girls t-ball teams, our girls and mixed netball teams and our boys soccer team. Thanks to all students who participated, our staff who coached and umpired across the day and to Katie Scott for her organisation across the teams.
Year 1 & 2 Refurbishment
This week our Year Two students have moved back into their refurbished space. This completes our work in the Year One and Two learning spaces. This work will allow us to further implement explicit instruction practices across literacy and numeracy, including our daily systematic, synthetics phonics teaching. Thank you to our staff, students and community for your understanding and support as this work has progressed across the first half of the year.
School Council
This week we held our June meeting of School Council. We appreciated our State Member for Mordialloc, the Hon. Tim Richardson, joining our meeting. Tim took the time to share his reflections on our schoo’s centenary celebrationsl, discuss future possibilities for our school and other priorities for the Aspendale community. We value Tim’s ongoing support of our school and our local community.
2026 Foundation Enrolments
Amelia and I enjoy touring prospective families on Tuesday mornings and showcasing the learning opportunities at our school. We continue to accept Foundation enrolments for 2026. A gentle reminder to families intending to enrol their child at our school in 2026 to return their enrolment form to the school office to help us with forward planning for next year.
School Savings Bonus
Many families have utilised their school savings bonus over the first half of 2025. As outlined in previous emails, after 30 June any funds remaining after 30 June 2025, including online voucher amounts that have not been redeemed, will become a credit to use on school activities. However, the credit will not be available on your family account at our school until late July. Please see later in the newsletter for more information or contact the school office for further support.
Planning Week
Our teaching staff have taken time this week to review our teaching and learning programs across the first half of the year and to plan what’s next in Term Three. Thanks to each teaching team for completing this valuable work and to our students for following their routines and showcasing our expected behaviours across the week.
We look forward to our final week of Term Two, with student-led conferences on Monday, our 100 year fun day on Tuesday and crazy hair day on Wednesday.
Enjoy the rest of the week,
Tom
Another huge THANK-YOU to Dana & Dude Balloons and Events for supplying the wonderful balloon displays for our 100 Years Celebration afternoon on Friday 16th May.
Thank- you Dana!
