We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.
We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations, and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.
We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.
New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.
Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.
Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.
As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.
Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.
Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

Xuri Jingcheng Sister School Visit:
Thank you to the following families who have hosted the 11 students from our Sister School:
The Hewitt’s, Lappen’s, Skands’, Santos’, Morriss’ and Stokes’.
We appreciate the range of activities and experiences that you have provided to the visiting students during their time here at APS!
Across the week our Sister School students were immersed in life at APS, with a few extra special inclusions. On Monday the students were welcomed by the winter rain and glorious rainbow over our school. The students meet their host families before heading off for their first night of homestay. Tuesday was spent reading Possum Magic and tasting some Aussie favourites like vegemite and pavlova, then joining in a range of sports activities run by our Year 6 students.
Wednesday the sister school students, Ms Cai, along with Ms Ma, Ms Fletcher, Mr Pearce, our school captains and Mandarin leaders, journeyed to the MCG to celebrate the 46th year of the Jiangsu-Victorian Sister School relationship at a Department Event.
Thursday was a busy day! The students were delighted with the Australian Animal incursion with our Year 1 students and host families, followed by Beach Patrol with Year 2 and Year 5 and the afternoon was spent educating the APS Year 6 students about Nanjing before an Art lesson taught by Ms Cai. There is another great day planned for tomorrow, before we bid our farewell at our assembly. Please join us in the courtyard from 2:45pm for our Assembly.
Thank you, to our Host families, Ms Ma, Ms Fletcher, our Mandarin leaders and Ms Cai for supporting the students from Xuri Jingcheng throughout their stay. Our 16 year 6’s who are taking part in our China Tour in September are even more excited now!

It's only Week 2, but we have really been buzzing up in Year 5 already. What a massive first couple of weeks we have had finishing off our current PYP Unit of Inquiry:
Our awesome excursion to Southland last week saw us watching the incredible movie 'Ocean with David Attenborough'. A must watch! A movie which informed us of the importance of our oceans, and the human impact on our oceans.
We then finished off our unit with lots of research into Aid Organisations, Ocean Organisations and developing our own creative ideas and plans for how we can help improve or lessen the impact of human destruction on our oceans.
Our final task was displaying our learning and research and sharing this with our friends and peers. Students were able to explore and learn from each other through a gallery presentation of their researched information.
We would like to congratulate our Year 5 students on the way they have managed themselves and their learning with such passion throughout this unit.
Commitment
This term our whole school focus is on the value of Commitment. The message for our Play is the Way program also fits beautifully with this, as it is ‘Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with’. Below is the outline of our weekly focuses for the term which are all expectations from our PBL behaviour matrix.
Already this term students across the school have spent time with their buddies, engaged in lessons focusing on this term’s value, learnt a new ‘play is the way’ game called ‘Pegasaurus’ and begun the next chapter as part of the Respectful Relationships program. There have also been lots of tokens handed out as we settle back into our classroom routines for Term Three. Below are some sample routines from across the school.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge
Well done to all the students who have been recording their PRC books on the website. The challenge finishes at the beginning of September, but it would be great to have everyone’s book data in by the middle of August. Students who complete the challenge will then receive a book and certificate later this term. Any questions or problems with logging in, please contact us as soon as possible.
