A note from our Assistant Principal....

Dear families,

Throughout 2024 our school will focus on our school wide goal of Continuing to promote respect, kindness and a sense of belonging amongst our school.

This goal has been set following the data from our Attitudes to School student survey from 2023, where the key areas of Differentiated learning challenge, Effective classroom behaviour, Effective teaching time and Sense of connectedness were identified.

One of the ways in which we aim to facilitate this improvement is through the extensive wellbeing program that we have here at Aspendale Primary. A key feature of our program is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). Through PBL we focus on setting consistent school wide expectations for students, providing acknowledgement when these expectations are met through our Token system and celebrating individual and group success. The expectations link to our school values of Passion, Respect, Integrity, Commitment and Empathy.

Here is an example of our behaviour expectations in the classroom:

All classes have started the year with a focus on building consistent learning routines. Explicitly teaching processes and procedures to students about how we operate in and around different spaces across the school is a valuable part in developing a kind and respectful school community. Once these process and procedures are embedded, they become routine behaviour. This also then contributes to the students knowing the expected behaviours wherever they are across the school. Additionally, each student understands their role in contributing to towards a welcoming environment where individuals are valued and feel that they belong.

One way that we can promote belonging is through our Uniform. It is an expectation that all students wear our school uniform with pride. We understand that at times students may need to wear a non-uniform item. In this instance parents or carers will need to email or contact the class teacher. If you should require assistance with purchasing uniform items, please contact the school for a confidential discussion.

Global Play Day:

On Wednesday, students participated in Global Play Day. It was wonderful moving around the school seeing all the students engaging in a wide variety of play based activities. Mrs Peterson our Wellbeing Learning Specialist has included information later in the newsletter.

NDIS and Privately Funded Support Services for students:

Last week, information was emailed to families about the guidelines and process regarding the delivery of NDIS and Privately funded therapies and services at school. Should you require further information please contact the school office or email: aspendale.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Looking forward to what week 3 will bring!

Kind regards,

Amelia Busuttil

Global Play Day!

Yesterday we celebrated Global School Play Day. Students had the opportunity to play with students in their own year level, as well as with their buddies and to also visit any other areas around the school or to drop in on past teachers. It was fantastic to see so many students able to share their passions with others and there were many games and toys brought from home to share.

All of our students truly exhibited our school values and demonstrated amazing teamwork, sportsmanship, patience and turn taking skills. We enjoyed a lovely picnic lunch together in the courtyard and were spoilt with the beautiful weather for the day. We look forward to many more celebration days across 2024.

Happy Lunar New Year

Library request

Volunteers Needed!

We are thrilled to have a large collection of new library books and decodable readers this year for our students to read.

But, before they can be added to our collections we need them contacted to protect them from wear and tear.

Can you help?

Please contact Melissa McSweeney or our school office to collect a bag of books and some contact to take home and help us get these books on shelves as quick as we can!

Thanks,

Melissa McSweeney

Dave the dog - Visiting therapy dog program at APS

Dear Families,

This year Dave the wellbeing dog will be returning to Aspendale Primary School. Dave will be attending school 1 to 2 days a week with Emily Bourke in Year 4. Emily and Dave have completed the Visiting Therapy Dog & Handler Certification Course with the Lead the Way Institute.

While Dave will be spending most of his time in the Year 4 learning space, there are many opportunities for him to interact with students across all year levels, through lunch time clubs and yard duty times.

If you have concerns about your child interacting with Dave due to health or anxiety reasons, please speak to Emily Bourke or Assistant Principal Tom Pearce. Our therapy dog program is completely voluntary, and all students will be given the option to participate or not.

If you have questions regarding the benefits of therapy dogs in schools or would just like to meet Dave, you can speak to Emily Bourke in the Year 4 learning space. The Dogs in Schools policy is available upon request via email.

Please see below the Dave the Dog Essential Agreement

We will all be able to touch and cuddle Dave, but we must agree to take care of him.

  • We always listen to instructions from Miss Bourke when around Dave.
  • It is important for Dave to always feel safe, therefore we are calm and gentle with him.
  • When Dave is in the classroom, we must be given permission to come and say hello to him.
  • When Dave is in his cave, we leave him in peace.
  • We let Miss Bourke know if we are feeling worried about having Dave near us or are afraid of dogs.
  • We wash our hands or use hand sanitiser after touching Dave.

Warm Regards,

Emily Bourke
