Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.

We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations,  and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.

We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.

New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.

Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.

Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.

As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.

Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.

Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.

A note from our Inclusion Leader....

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have all had a lovely week and enjoyed some of the lovely sunshine.

Here are some of the happenings around the school this week:

Year 5 Camp

Our year 5 Students had a fantastic time at camp last week, with Mr Pearce visiting last Wednesday afternoon. Thank you to the Year 5 team for all their  organising! Everyone was raving about their experiences this week. You can read more about this in the Year 5 update.

Beach Patrol- Foundation & Year 6 Marine Ambassadors

On Wednesday after recess, Foundation took on Beach Patrol at Aspendale Beach, accompanied by the Year 6 Marine Ambassadors and parent helpers. They collected 8kg of rubbish along with some dried starfish! Thanks so much to all the parent helpers who assisted with this activity. The Foundation students all enjoyed their time outside and the experience with looking after the environment, linking to their new Sharing the Planet Inquiry. Another great job to the Marine Ambassadors!

Division Sport Playoffs

Continuing on from the successes of the T-ball and Girls Soccer team.
Last Friday, our Boys' Soccer team headed off to the division tournament. Congratulations to all the players who competed! You each performed exceptionally well, and every one of you should be proud of your efforts.

The highlight of the day was seeing how each player embodied our school’s PRICE values—respect and integrity—both on and off the field. Well done to everyone for maintaining such high standards!

A heartfelt thank you to all the families who came out to support the team; your encouragement was greatly appreciated.

We also want to extend our gratitude to Ms. Scott and Mr. Dowling for their coaching expertise and dedication.

John Monash Science School

On Wednesday, twelve Year 5 students went to John Monash Science school, accompanied by Mrs Cornell for their first Science and Maths extension sessions. These sessions are run by Year 10 students from John Monash. They will look forward to their next 3 sessions over the rest of this term. You can read more about this in the Year 5 update.

Australian Maths Competition

On Wednesday our High-ability Practice Leader- Mrs Carla Youngs held the Australian Maths Competition for 175 students throughout Year 3-6. Students answered 30 problem solving questions. We are so proud of our students for embracing new challenges.

Basketball / Netball court

As you may have seen at school a work site has been established and construction has begun this week on our new basketball and netball court. We have spoken with the children about moving safely around the site and adjusting their play during breaks. We will have to test the new synthetic surface with a Year 6 versus teacher’s netball or basketball game-  Look out Year 6’s!

Trivia Night support
Thank you very much to all those who donated and sponsored the evening. Next week, we will be sharing the long list of community organisations and businesses that made the event that much better. Thank you very much!

Classes accross the school are getting ready for Science Week. The Year 6 Environment Leaders have a few facts to share.

Have a lovely weekend and for those playing along enjoy the final few days of the Olympics.

Thanks,
Jess Johnston

Year 5 update

Year 5 Update

Wow! What a very busy time Year 5 have had this term so far!

The first couple of weeks brought our Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry to an end after a visit from the SES to share with us their natural disaster responses, tools and equipment. Thank you to Chelsea SES unit for coming and visiting us and sharing their very informative and interesting slideshow and truck.

To wrap up the unit, our students completed a natural disaster research project in groups which required several elements to be completed. They were able to choose a natural disaster that interested them and find interesting, creative ways to display and communicate their learning. They then LAUNCHED their projects to their audiences of their Year 2 buddies and their parents.

Last week, Year 5 went on camp to The Ranch in Boneo. Wow! What a fabulously fun time we had. The weather was perfect, the activities exciting and challenging and students were amazing. All students grew in different ways, whether it be their confidence, resilience, independence and proudly followed our school PRICE values throughout the camp. Their support and encouragement towards each other was wonderful.

Earlier this week, some of our Year 5 students were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in a special learning program at Monash University. These sessions focus on maths and science and are run fortnightly over the next eight weeks. Students enjoyed participating in maths challenges, experimenting with chemistry and learning about biology. Below are some photos from the biology component.

Thank You - Trivia Night

Next week is Science Week!

Stay tuned for the Environment Leaders daily announcements as they share some very amazing animal and plant adaptation facts! Well done to Luke, Josh, Sean, Oli and Marriot for finding so many amazing facts. Their go to guide? Corey Tutt's Deadly Science: Animal Adaptation book.
