We acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the lands, waterways and skies of the Bunurong Peoples of the Kulin Nation where we gather, learn and grow at Aspendale Primary School.
We pay our respects to past and present Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations, and their ongoing cultural, spiritual and educational practices.
We extend this respect to all Torres Strait Islanders and any First Nations peoples who learn or visit these grounds. We thank you for sharing and caring for the land we are learning on.
New version of the Acknowedgement of Country
Above is an updated Acknowledgment of Country that has been written in consultation with staff, students and members of our community. We recieved positive feedback and approval from our friends at the Bunurong Land Council in 2023.
Aspendale Primary School commemorated Reconciliation Week.
We understand that for many members of the APS community, this is a challenging time.
Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Now more than ever, these conversations are important to be having.
As a school, we commemorated the week by focusing on developing our sense of community and connections with a whole school event.
Our School Captains made a video during camp to commemorate the week. It starts with our school's Acknowledgement of Country. You can watch the video here.
Thank you to Gus, Surina, Warren & Edie for helping create the video. You all did an amazing job understanding the purpose of the week.
To the Aspendale School Community,
I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Tom Pearce as the Principal at Aspendale Primary School.
The School Council commenced the process of finding the next Principal after the resignation of Ms Coby Larrieu. The process of appointing a substantive principal at a school follows a rigorous Department of Education process including the assessment of a written application, interview and referee commentary. The process also ensures the principles of merit and equity are applied.
At the conclusion of this process, Tom was assessed by the panel to be the preferred candidate. The panel then recommended his appointment for approval from the Department of Education.
Tom has been with our school since 2007, teaching and leading in a variety of roles and capacities. Be it as a Learning Specialist, Assistant Principal and most recently in the position of Acting Principal. Tom has demonstrated that he is a considered, strategic, and inclusive leader, with an ongoing commitment to the students, families, staff, and broader Aspendale Primary School community.
I thank Tom for his acceptance of the position and I am confident that his leadership will contribute significantly to the continued growth and development of our School. Tom is a familiar face to you all and I know he will enjoy your support and confidence as he assumes this role at an important time in the history of our school, as we celebrate our centenary next year.
Please join me in congratulating Tom on his appointment.
Regards,
Sam Morris
School Council President

Dear Aspendale Families,
It has been lovely to return from my long service leave to the school in full swing. I’ve been hearing about all the fun that has been happening, including 100 days of school and the Olympic Day. This week our students in year 5 and 6 have watched performances at Frankston Arts Centre and Mordialloc Secondary respectively and our year 3 students had a wheelchair basketball incursion. It has also been great watching the transformation taking place on the netball/basketball court, the blue turf was laid today!
Parent Opinion Survey
The Department of Education’s Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion survey has commenced, and we are keen to hear from as many people in our school community as possible. The more voices we hear from, the better we can understand what is working for people and what areas we need to continue to develop. You should have received a link via email. The survey remains open until Friday 30th August.
Smile Squad is Coming
Just a reminder that Smile Squad is coming to Aspendale Primary School to ensure all students have a healthy smile!
Smile Squad is a Victorian Government program that provides free dental care to all Victorian government primary and secondary school students.
The friendly Smile Squad dental team will visit Aspendale Primary School soon to conduct a free annual dental health examination for every student and provide free follow up treatment as needed.
The consent form has been emailed out. Please contact the office if you need one.
Science Week:
This week the students have been celebrating Science Week with a range of activities and learning tasks related to Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability. The Environment Leaders took action, sharing facts over the speaker, while other year levels investigated specific species survival and the physiological, behavioral and structural animal adaptations.
Book Week:
Next week, we celebrate book week. We have Lit Fest on Tuesday afternoon 3:45-4:45pm in the Gym, Library and around the school, come and check out the Student Writing Gallery. Then on Thursday we have our annual Book Week Character Dress Up Parade in the courtyard from 9:10am. There will be a range of other activities taking place across the week.
Medical/illness awareness:
Although the sun has started shining, we are experiencing several illnesses (e.g. Influenza, Whooping Cough, Gastroenteritis) across our school community. As these illnesses are highly contagious, it is important that your child does not attend school when symptoms present and good general hygiene (e.g. covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing) will assist in limiting the spread of these illnesses. Should you be notified that your child is positive to any of these illnesses, please notify the school via class teachers or the office.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Tom as the substantive Principal at Aspendale Primary School. I look forward to continuing to work alongside Tom and the team as we continue our improvement work.
Enjoy your weekend,
Amelia Busuttil
