At Aspendale Primary School we are guided by the Victorian Curriculum English scope and sequence. Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking and Listening skills, knowledge and understanding are developed across the strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. The six pillars of literacy – oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension – all underpin our instructional model, with explicit teaching, scaffolding and independent practice, key elements of our literacy sessions.
It is through the study of English that our students learn to analyse, think critically and creatively, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and the world around them. Our transdisciplinary approach ensures language and literacy are central to learning across our Units of Inquiry. The role of language is crucial in nurturing the full development of each learner, fostering the values of diversity, international mindedness and intercultural awareness.
